HIV/AIDS
PROGRAMS
To manage the day-to-day operation
of our Clinic, and to provide other needed community
services, particularly with regard to AIDS prevention,
counseling and care, Matibabu Foundation and
Mr. Ogola have established a non-profit Kenyan
NGO, known as Matibabu Foundation Kenya. Among
the numerous activities conducted by Matibabu
Foundation Kenya, apart from administering the
Clinic, are:
-
Education
to discourage behaviors that increase HIV
risk, such as wife inheritance.
-
Working in partnership with CARE-KENYA to
give women job training and microfinancing,
so that widows have alternatives to being
“inherited.”
-
AIDS
counseling and testing of pregnant women.
-
A
Youth Friendly Center project which provides
programs and activities to discourage risky
behavior among youth, and promote healthful
life choices. YFC programs are assisted
by student interns from Nairobi University
and other institutions such as Yale University.
-
Educating
school children about HIV/AIDS. For example,
in coordination with the Kenya Ministries
of Health and Education, Matibabu Foundation
Kenya distributes to young people Straight
Talk Magazine, which contains full and accurate
information about AIDS.
-
Counseling
and testing, which take place not only at
our Clinic, but through community outreach.
Matibabu Foundation Kenya works with government
provincial administrators, local organizations,
churches, chiefs and village elders to promote
voluntary AIDS counseling and testing.
-
Sponsorship
of sports competitions, such as the Matibabu
Cup soccer competition, which gives us the
opportunity to communicate with large numbers
of people about health issues.
